Author resources
A collection of books, classes, and sundry other things I’ve found helpful for craft and business!
Craft:
🍎 Crafting the Carnal Class Handout
This the handout from Sierra’s own class about writing spicy/erotic romance. Very long (I’m sorry.)
🎧 Jennifer Lynne Barnes on the psychology of fiction
I also recommend checking out her appearance on the American Psychological Association podcast, and this write up of her talk on writing for your id at the RWA 2018 conference.
🍎 📚 Seven Figure fiction by Theodora Taylor
If you’re not cooking with butter, then what are you doing? This link will take you to the book and to her classes; all of them are fabulous.
Publishing and Marketing:
💪 Alessandra Torre’s Inkers Facebook Group
This is a closed group you will need to request to join, but a fabulous place for author resources!
A fabulous conference (available in-person and digitally) with tracks for craft, business, and marketing.
🗽 Jane Friedman’s primer on finding a literary agent
Excellent field guide for authors thinking they’d like literary representation (even if you plan to primarily publish indie, it’s still something to consider for international rights, audio rights, app licensing, etc.)
💪 Katee Robert’s Author Resources
Including an income tracker database and a wildly helpful crowdfunding FAQ document.
A website that aggregates revenue across vendors—very helpful for widely published authors!
🍎 Skye Warren’s Ads and Breakout Novel classes
I’ve taken both courses and came away bursting with ideas and new skills.
📰 Skye Warren’s Author Newsletter
Marketing and advertising advice from the GOAT.
📰 Speaking of: Skye Warren’s Zero Dollar Marketing Newsletter
Part Two, Part Three, Part Four, and Part Five here.
💻 Vellum
What I use to format my eBooks and print books. Invaluable (but sadly only on Mac!)
Planning and Sustainability:
🍎 The Write Better Faster Academy with Becca Syme
Her Strengths for Writers class literally changed my life. I also highly recommend checking out her Patreon content and her digital conferences when they come around.
🍎 Sarra Cannon’s Heart Breathings Courses
Fantastic for both granular and career planning. She also has a great YouTube channel if you, like me, are soothed by other people filling out their planners (even if you, like me, are also bad at planners.)
Feel free to edit colors and fonts (and update the calendar pages of course). Make a copy to your own Canva account first!
I’ve used this tool for over ten years to plan out my goals and deadlines. I’d be lost without it, I say unto thee.
